What is Chiropractic Care?

Chiropractors are primary healthcare practitioners which means that you do not need a referral from a Medical Doctor in most cases (HMO's Require Referral) to make an appointment.

Walk into a cardiologist's office and you might find yourself diagnosed with high blood pressure, arrhythmia, or hypertension. Walk into a chiropractor's office and you might be diagnosed with.....wait; what will you be diagnosed with?

The nature of chiropractic differs from traditional medicine, because chiropractic is about restoring and keeping the body at optimal health and function. Medicine places a greater emphasis on finding and fixing a given issue---without addressing overall health.

Chiropractic is about helping people live healthier, fuller lives. Chiropractors focus on the nervous system and painlessly, manually adjust the vertebral column to affect the nervous system. According to Gray's Anatomy, the nervous system is the master system in the body which controls and coordinates all other systems such as respiratory, digestive, muscular, and immune.

Chiropractors have commonly used two terms to define their approach. The first, chiropractic corrective care, is the term for the application of healing methods when a patient's body is in pain, due to spinal misalignments or subluxations, leading to nerve interference, referred pain and/or muscles spasms.  The second, chiropractic lifetime wellness care, is key to maintaining the highest quality function and health for our patients, outside of acute pain caused by such misalignments.

As a chiropractor, Dr. Durkee specializes in not only returning the body to an optimal state of function, but also encourages regularly scheduled care to assure the body stays in a state of maximized health while her patients continue their busy lifestyles at play, and at work, without acute pain.
